Highveld Lions beat Titans to win the South African 2013 T20 Challenge
After the Lions posted 155/5 off 20 overs with young Quinton de Kock (44) and veteran Neil McKenzie (39) the main contributors to the total, many supporters at the Bidvest Wanderers Stadium feared it might not be sufficient for success. The Multipy Titans started superbly and reached 40 without loss within four overs, but the run rate slowed and the wickets started to fall. Chris Morris, Sohail Tanvir, Aaron Phangiso, Hardus Viljoen and Imran Tahir took two wickets each for the Lions, who celebrated wildly when the last wicket fell qualifying for the lucrative Champions League T20 2013
Matriculant steers Lions to T20 win against Cobras
Breathtaking to the very last ball. That is one way to describe the T20 challenge encounter between the bizhub Highveld Lions and Cape Cobras at Senwes Park on 26 November 2016 that ultimately ended in a 3-run D/L win for the Lions. The then 18-year-old matriculant from St Stithians College, Wiaan Mulder, was the hero for the home team as he showcased his big match temperament with a perfect yorker to bowl his side to victory with the final delivery of the match. The Cobras needed four runs from the final ball, as an expectant crowd held their breath – only for screams of adulation to erupt, seconds later, as Mulder sent George Linde’s off-stump cartwheeling out the ground.
McKenzie guides Lions to T20 title in 2007
Neil McKenzie was composure personified as he raced the Lions to a comfortable six-wicket victory with 14 balls to spare in the 2007 Final against the Cape Cobras at the Bidvest Wanderers Stadium in 2007. The Cobras were always under pressure after superb Lions bowling ensured wickets fall at regular intervals as the visitors could muster just 147 for nine after being sent in to bat. Garnett Kruger was fast and furious as he took 3 for 32, setting the tone for a brilliant effort in the field by the Lions.
Chris Gayle makes immediate impact for bizhub Highveld Lions
Chris Gayle was donning the #LionsCharge attire during the 2014 T20 season. He made an immediate mark on the RAM Slam T20 Challenge as he led the bizhub Highveld Lions to victory over the Dolphins. Gayle broke the Sunfoil Dolphins’ key partnership in taking 4/36 as the visitors were limited to 172/9, He then hit 56 from 38 deliveries as the Lions reached their target with six wickets and seven balls in hand.
