Top 3 #LionsCharge Momentum eKasi Challenge moments
Five time defending champions the bizhub Highveld Lions are gearing up for the Momentum eKasi Challenge against close rivals the Multiply Titans.
The challenge proves a highly successful way to commence the season in either an away or home fixture each year. This year’s match takes place at the Nelson Mandela Sports Complex in Hammanskraal on Wednesday, 13 September.
At the very heart of the Momentum eKasi Challenge is the intention of developing the sport at a grassroots level and using sports as a tool for initiating life-skills training and to inspire township youth.
We asked the players which Momentum ekasi Challenge memories stood out for them. Here’s a look at the top 3 most memorable events on the cricket field by the bizhub Highveld Lions during the past editions.
Victory in the inaugural Mometum eKasi Challenge match
Played at the Mamelodi Cricket Club just outside Pretoria, it was the first of four matches between the two teams.
“Bringing top-class cricket to the township” was the slogan used in the build up to the clash which saw the Lions post 260-9 thanks in the main to 104 off 112 balls, including nine fours and two sixes from a by then 20 year old Quinton de Kock
2014 Momentum eKasi Challenge nail-biting finish
The Lions won the toss and posted a highly competitive total of 258/7, thanks in the main to an excellent innings of 78 not out (73 balls, seven fours and two sixes) from the Man of the Match Devon Conway. The Lions had 80/1 at one stage, but then lost four wickets for 43 runs before Conway reconstructed the innings with good support from Pretorius (32 off 37 balls, 4 fours).
The pitch with its uneven bounce, extreme grip for the spinners and slowness, posed problems for the batsmen throughout the day and the task proved beyond the lower order.
The match, of fluctuating fortunes had an appropriate finish, going right down to the last over, which started with the Titans needing 13 for victory with two wickets in hand. In the end Heinrich Klaasen needed to hit a six off the last delivery from Dwaine Pretorius to tie the match, but it was not to be as the Lions seamer held his nerve.
600 run game in Soweto
A product of Soweto Cricket Club, Temba Bavuma cracked 117 off 118 balls, including seven fours and a six at the 2016 edition of the eKasi Challenge in Soweto. These two centuries made it a very special day for the Soweto Club who also produced an outstanding pitch on which almost 600 runs were scored.
bizhub Highveld Lions managed to keep the trophy by posting a massive 308/8 in 50 overs. This was the highest score thus far by any team in this competition
