Rickelton and De Zorzi open Emerging Squad Tour with century stand
Ryan Rickelton and Tony de Zorzi got the South African Emerging Squad tour of Sri Lanka off to a flying start with an opening stand of 131 on the opening day of the first four-day unofficial Test match at Katunayake on Thursday.
De Zorzi won the toss and then helped lay the foundation that enabled them to dominate the first day’s play with a total of 318/7 of which De Zorzi contributed 77 (124 balls, 12 fours and a six) and Rickelton 63 (113 balls, 7 fours). The pair put on 112 of their partnership before lunch at a confident rate of exactly 4 to the over.
There was a further half-century from Matthew Breetzke (73 off 113 balls, 10 fours), a member of this year’s under-19 World Cup squad. Breetzke and Tshepang Dithole shared the other significant partnership of the innings of 85 for the fifth wicket.
The South Africans went into the last half-hour of the match with an imposing total of 300/4 in 84 overs before losing 3 wickets for 1 run in the closing overs.
Malinda Pushpakumara was the pick of the Sri Lankan attack, taking 5/91 in a marathon effort of 33 overs.
