Led by Reeza Hendricks's unbeaten 173, South Africa A registered a massive 164-run win over Afghanistan A at the Groenkloof Stadium in Pretoria on Sunday (July 30). With two wins in as many matches, the hosts have moved to the top of the points table of the triangular series, also involving India A.
Hendricks was in excellent touch, hitting 14 fours and five sixes as he led the home side to a daunting 336/5 after they were put in to bat first. It was the bizhub Highveld Lions’ batsman’s ninth List A century.
Alongside Reeza was Henry Davids. The openers set the foundation for South Africa A with a 79 run first-wicket partnership. Even after breaking the partnership, there was no respite for the Afghanistan bowlers. Hendricks, who was particularly severe against the likes of Karim Janat and Fareed Ahmad, thrashed them to all the parts of the ground.
Heinrich Klaasen also scored a handy 30, before he was dismissed by Rahmat Shah on the team score of 175. After Klaasen’s dismissal, it was the pair of Hendricks and skipper Khaya Zondo, who stitched a mammoth partnership of 132 runs to take the game completely away from Afghanistan A.
Afghanistan A’s innings was rocked early when Dwaine Pretorius struck in the second over to remove Javed Ahmadi. He made it a double-strike by dismissing Usman Ghani in the sixth over. Captian Khaya Zondo then introduced spinner Shamsi to trigger a middle-order slide.
Afghanistan A were bowled out for 172 in 32.2 overs. They play India A next at the same venue on 1 August, while South Africa A’s next match against India A will be on Thursday, 3 August.
